The Complete Dubai Skincare Routine (Morning & Night)
Atif AliShort answer: in Dubai, build the simplest routine you will actually repeat — cleanse, treat, moisturise, and SPF every morning. The three things this climate punishes are dehydration from constant air conditioning, mineral build-up from hard water, and year-round UV. Everything below is organised around those three.
Why Dubai skin behaves differently
Air conditioning dehydrates. You are in conditioned air most of the day. AC strips humidity from the room and from your skin, which is why people with naturally oily skin often find themselves simultaneously greasy and tight here. That combination is dehydration, not dryness — and the fix is water-binding ingredients, not heavier oils.
Hard water leaves residue. Desalinated UAE tap water carries a high mineral load. It can leave a faint film after washing that makes skin feel taut and makes some cleansers less effective. It also contributes to dullness over time.
UV never really stops. As covered in our Dubai sunscreen guide, UV here is a year-round factor, and UVA reaches you through car and office windows.
The morning routine
1. Gentle cleanse
Skip harsh foaming washes in the morning. With hard water and AC, a gentle hydrating cleanser like CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser removes overnight oil without stripping the barrier. If your skin feels squeaky after washing, the cleanser is too strong.
2. Antioxidant serum
Morning is when an antioxidant earns its place, because it works alongside sunscreen against daytime damage. La Roche-Posay 12% Vitamin C is a solid choice. If vitamin C irritates you, niacinamide 10% is gentler and helps with oil balance and pores.
3. Hydrate
A hyaluronic acid serum such as Hyalu B5 pulls water into the skin — useful when the ambient air is doing the opposite. Apply to slightly damp skin, then seal with moisturiser, or in very dry AC it can work against you.
4. Moisturiser
Lighter than you would use in a cold climate, but do not skip it. It seals the hydration you just applied.
5. SPF — every day
The step that matters most. A lightweight broad-spectrum SPF 40–50 that does not pill under makeup. See our sunscreen collection.
The evening routine
1. Double cleanse if you wore SPF or makeup
Sunscreen is designed to cling. A single water-based wash often will not fully remove it, and leftover SPF is a common hidden cause of congestion. An oil or balm cleanser first, then your gentle cleanser.
2. Treat — but only one active at a time
Night is when retinol and exfoliating acids belong. La Roche-Posay Retinol B3 or Vichy LiftActiv Retinol Specialist are both well-tolerated starting points.
Start twice a week, not nightly. Build up over six to eight weeks. Most retinol failures are people going too hard too early, getting irritated, and quitting.
For pigmentation specifically — very common in this climate — Mela B3 targets dark spots. It only works if you are equally disciplined about daily SPF.
3. Moisturise
A slightly richer moisturiser at night helps counter the overnight AC. This is where you can use the heavier texture that would pill under makeup during the day.
What to skip in this climate
- Heavy occlusive layers in daytime. They pill under SPF and makeup in humidity, and encourage congestion in the heat.
- Daily physical scrubs. With hard water already stressing the barrier, aggressive scrubbing does more harm than good. Chemical exfoliation once or twice a week is plenty.
- Stacking multiple new actives. Introduce one product at a time, two weeks apart, or you will not know what caused a reaction.
- Storing actives in a hot bathroom or car. Retinol and vitamin C degrade with heat. Keep them in a cool, dark cupboard.
A realistic first routine
If you are starting from nothing, do not buy eight products. Buy four: a gentle cleanser, one treatment serum, a moisturiser and a sunscreen. Use them consistently for two months. That will outperform an elaborate ten-step routine you abandon in three weeks.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use vitamin C and retinol together?
Most people do better using vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night rather than layering them. This reduces irritation while keeping both benefits. If your skin is resilient you can experiment, but separate them first.
Does hard water in the UAE really affect skin?
It can. High mineral content leaves a residue that some people find drying or dulling. A gentle cleanser and thorough rinsing help; a shower filter is an option if you notice a consistent difference.
How long before I see results?
Hydration changes can show within days. Pigmentation and fine lines realistically take eight to twelve weeks of consistent use. Anything promising dramatic results in a week is overselling.
Should my routine change in summer?
Lighten textures and reapply SPF more often. The core routine stays the same. The bigger seasonal risk is heat degrading your products, so check storage.
